The Beginning Of The End…

I’ve always believed that when one story ends, a new story begins.

In 2004 I was contacted by a publisher to publish these stories. It was a small publishing company, and I was grateful for the opportunity. During the course of the next year my disk with the stories got misplaced by the publisher. I had made a copy of the disk, but during our move, I had no idea which box to even begin looking through. Hence, I thought my stories were gone.

In December of 2005 I received an e-mail from a Marine mom asking me when the book was going to be published. I then decided it was time to post that there was not going to be a book, and that I didn’t know how I was going to collect the stories. A few days later I received a few hundred e-mails from women sharing that I had to find a way to publish the stories. I remember I was so overwhelmed that I began deleting the e-mails except for one. There was one I answered, and it was from Janice (Jan) D Moon . She had saved some of my stories and was sending them back to me. She had contacted other Marine moms and had them do the same.

On December 31, 2005, I woke up in the morning, and without even getting out of bed, I called Jan and introduced myself. I told her that what she did for me was so sweet. To take the time to care and send me back stories that I had never even shared with my son was a gift. We chatted for a few hours and then I said, “Jan, what are you doing for the next three weeks?” She said, “Not much.” I said, “Well, if you want to get on a plane, I’ll buy you a ticket, and the two of us can do this book.” We didn’t know each other, but decided we would both take a leap of faith and see what happened. A few days later I picked Jan up from the airport, and during those three weeks we didn’t get much done on the book, but we became the best of friends.

When it was time for Jan to go home we both cried. Now we would have to do this project together from opposite sides of the country. It was amazing how much we got done. Daily phone calls that always began with prayer, reminded us to keep forging ahead.

Jan put together a beautiful pictorial video, and was the one who made sure that we had permission from every Marine mom to share their picture with you. (There over 100 pictures of Marine’s and their families).

Jan, you are an amazing woman. I want you to know that I loved this journey, and I’m glad we got to do this together.

I learned today, being that today is the 5 year anniversary of September 11, that it was during my time spent online where I learned there is this great place between the “all or nothing” of life. It was during the “between” part, where this story was written. So, as I end this chapter of my life I would like to personally thank all the Moderators of Marine Moms Online. I never would have made it through my son’s deployment without you, and had I not had a place to share the stories of this journey, I would have missed it.

I also want to “Thank” all the Marine moms, dads, veterans, sisters, brothers and friends of those who served. We went through the beginning of this war together, and I would like to say that when you go through the hills and valleys with someone- you never forget them. I promise. I will never forget you!

For in every ending is a beginning.

Today as I reflect back on these stories I want to share one thing. “You only get to do today one time… Don’t miss it!”

THE END…
